Intimacy in eating together
26 May 2016
One of the lessons I learnt from being in an extremely hectic working environment, is to take time to simply eat. Have a meal, a snack, a drink and not be distracted by the computer, the phones or even people around you. It is an extremely difficult task because I constantly find myself eating, trying to finish some work and giving consultation to my colleagues all at the same time.
“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.” – Luciano Pavarotti
Which was why we decided to simply go out and eat today! Stopped by Kaw Kaw Sg for late lunch. It was almost 3 pm when we arrived. Don’t be fooled by these lovely, smiley faces. Everyone was furiously starving lol.
Kaw Kaw definitely has the best fried mushroom. It is so addictive and Shikin and me could not stop munching on them.
I should have read the menu more carefully. I did not know that my order is this. 3 huge sausages. Damn. This is the side effect from being too hungry.
Since I was bo-chup (anyhow) person, I ate it anyway. It was too troublesome to change my order and I did not want to wait any longer for food.
Did you know that people will start to grow closer when they eat together? There is just something about facing each other while we relax and munch the blessings on the table. There is also something about the exchange of words and laughter during a meal that somehow magically bonds people together.
A meal that ends with dessert will be even sweeter.
Why sweeter? No, it is not due to all the sugar rush in it. It is due to the act of sharing this dessert together. The next time you dive your forks into the same dessert, notice how comfortable you are doing that. People who are not close to each other would never want to share their food. Even if you are not close, the willingness to share food will bring you closer to each other.
I guess that is what happened to us. We try our best to meet for a nice meal at the end of each term. Not everyone makes it, so we make do with whoever who can. For those who are unable to make it, there is always a next time. 🙂
Sharing food with another human being is an intimate act that should not be indulged in lightly.“ ― M.F.K. Fisher
I mean, who would want to miss on this intimate act of eating together right?
